Is there some evolutionary advantage for humans having our ears on either side instead of on top of the head?

    I don't know about evolution but I could provide an answer for why we'd rather keep our ears where they are. Your ears act as recievers but sounds can come from a variety of directions. It should be no surprise that most sounds will be coming from our sides and not from above. Most communication between humans is conducted at that level and makes it much easier to for their ears to recieve sounds.

    You may have experienced this if you've ever heard some one say that it'd be easier to hear if they were spoken to directly. That means to say that the direction the sound initially is traveling from makes a difference. Not to mention it'd be much more difficult to get that every thing "in stereo".

    Now if you're asking why we don't have our ears like that of say a dog or cat... (Which have ears "on top"?) I'd be purely guessing but I'd say it has to do with the shape of our skull.
