Why is it colder on the top of a mountain when hot air is supposed to rise?

    As air rises it expands and cools and as it descends it compresses and warms up. So by the time the air gets to the mountain it's become very cold.

    Oh by the way- the hot air is "supposed to rise" above the colder air around it but as mentioned earlier it will lose it's energy.
