When getting married, is a wedding ceremony really that important to you, as opposed to simply saying "I love you" to the person in private and living happily ever after?

Personally, a wedding ceremony in front of family and friends was important to both of us. For me, it was my second wedding. I wanted my family to have the opportunity to see that I wasn't screwing up with another abuser this time. For him, he was 56 years old, and it was his first marriage. He was very close to his family. He wanted very much to have them there. For both of us, a public pronouncement of our love was a strong desire.
