where do I get the kvm switch and does it matter that the CPU's are from different makers? A Dell and a Compaq?

They are available at most computer stores, such as BestBuy.
It does not matter who the manufacturer is it will still work. You just connect both the computers to the KVM switch (monitor and keyboard hookups) and 1 connection is then fed to the Monitor. The KVM switch has a button to switch between which computer you're using.
This is used a lot in Rackmount server rooms. Some KVM swithc support 4 or more computers to save space and not have to buy a keaborad, mouse, monitor for each one.
