I always say: "I tend to be somewhat of a perfectionist with my work, and tend to become frustrated if I feel that I have not given 110%".

By saying this, you have answered their question, but you have also (slyly) highlighted the fact that you are an excellent, results driven employee.

Although .. obviously, if you aren't a perfectionist, don't use this answer! It just always works for me.

    • Actually, when I ask for flaws (and I ask for 3 of them), I specifically say I don't want to hear perfectionism. It's a cookie cutter answer that I hear from almost all the candidates I interview. You better find a new good weakness; this one is totally overused.

    • It might be overused, but if it's true, then that's what a candidate should say.

    • I totally agree with ilona. I'm not an interviewer, but I have enough sense to know that anyone who says this is just going to get a "this person is full of shit" look from their interviewer.

    • It might sound like a cookie cutter response, but better than just making something else up that isn't true to appease an interviewer's sensibilities. In my case, my references would always back up what I say ... both personal and professional ones.

    • Or you just said what the last five people said and the interviewers think of you as a boring suckup.

    • Having been on the hiring end you let "me" know:

      1. You don't do math very well.
      2. You exaggerate - hence not really a perfectionist.
      3. I won't be able to count on your reports - especially if you have something negative to say.
      4. Are probably giving me a line you think will pass.

Unless there are very compelling reasons otherwise - this type on answer get's the applicant tossed very quickly. No reason to waste more time.

    • If a new hire said this to me, I'd expect them to be a perfectionist.

And if I saw anything less from my own point of view as a perfectionist, I'd be seriously disappointed in them.
