*I typed this whole answer after reading your question. After typing, I read your question again, I realised that I over looked "pent-up" in your question. In no mood to delete my answer, I am going to post it anyyway. I am sure some wil find it helpful. I am just going to explain how to change general emotions. Here we go...

Think of something that makes you real sad. Talk about it in front of mirror.

Now talk about something that gets you real excited in front of mirror.

Did you see your self change phyically when you change topics? head down, low tone of voice, etc. .?

Now next time ur feeling down, change your physical state and you will find a change in your emotions.

    • Even if it doesn't focus on the "pent-up" part, it's helpful anyway, and it's a concept I haven't exactly realized consciously before. +

    • Glad it helped ;)

    • that's just acting different. true, acting can be it's own release, but it can also just further your emotional repression.

what helps me release bottled up emotion is allowing myself to explode. just get it all out. all your happy all your sad all your ENERGY. do something exhilerating, strenuous, awe-inspiring. SHOCK yourself into calm. it's amazing.
