I don't think it is told anywhere as a fact that Ungoliant was what I stated above. It is commonly accepted though.

my recolection is that it was one of the ainur who was corrupted by melkor during the music of the ainur and seeing the fire imperishible set within the void was drawn to it and was become manifest as a thing of shadow.
