How would they handle the term limit though if the president died and left the former president next in line? Technically, a president can only serve two terms with an additional 2 years if they took over a presidency because of death or impeachment. So if the president dies with 3 years left in service and the VP has already served 2 full terms, this wouldn't be constitutional. It would have been fine for Ford as the other answer here mentions because he only served most of one term, so he could still serve one full term as president.
