How do track and field coaches match athletes with events?

    That is the art of coaching. At different levels there are different restrictions on how many events and what kind of events an athlete is able to participate. Sometimes it depends on the other teams strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes it depends on the order of the events and how much time an athlete would have to recover between events.

    If you are asking a more simple question of how does the coach decide who should be a shot putter compared to a distance runner, it's quite simple. Most events favor a certain body shape and certain talents. The shot putter is usually the biggest and strongest guys on the team. Being the biggest individuals on the team, it is highly unlikely that they can run the fastest at the longer distances. Usually a trial meet determines what everyone can do and the coach decides just who will be entered in each event.
