I think it does. In my own case I had never been one to fuss over babies as I grew up, and was always regarded as a tomboy etc. I married and had three sons within four years, and was totally responsible for them - my husband was a real dud - and amazed even myself how well I coped. Once they grew up I reverted to being a kid-free-zone, until the grandkids arrived.... and I turned to mush again. I'm sure all women have a maternal instinct buried somewhere in there!
