Tell them you were on your way to a friend's house / office / whatever to return it to them, or that you were following its directions based on landmarks you saw when you "lost" the stuff you're trying to find.

I've BEEN geocaching before, I just haven't had to bother explaining to suspicious cops why I'm carrying a GPS and looking under streetsigns for stuff. Why the f*** would you NOT want to bullshit the cops, if it could be the difference between getting searched and possibly arrested or getting to enjoy the rest of your evening at home??
