Question

Help answer this question below.

My Sony rear projection (3 picture tube, 3 lenses model KP-53v15/KP-53V16) just started to show color ghost images and curvature in the picture. The sound is fine, and the cable input is fine. What could be wrong?

It sounds like the normal thing with a rear-projection CRT television: it needs to be calibrated and, particularly, to have the video guns aligned. RPCRTs have probably the best picture of any type of television on the market, but go out of alignment quite easily. Each video input should be properly calibrated whenever the television is moved; they will also druft out of alignment over time.

The television alignment can be calibrated at home by following the instructions in the owners manual. The image can be cailbrated using a calibration DVD, such as the "Digital Video Essentials" disk from Joe Kane Productions.

You may also want to hire in a technician to do a calibration on-site. You should ensure that the technician is trained to perform such work and has the proper equipment. He or she will be using features built into the television, that are not available to the normal user, and specialized calibration equipment. Technicians certified by the ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) are trained to do this type of work. Big-box stores so not provide this type of service. The ISF website (http://www.imagingscience.com/) provides a list of dealers who provide such services.

Re: "Flash Focus and sometimes a manual convergence"

I have assumed that the person answering this question has not found an acceptable solution in their owner's manual.

Someone with the proper tools and training will always do a better job of adjusting a television than an inexperienced consumer or an automatic system. An automatic system can be useful, but they have limitations. Trained technicians with access to factory service manuals will be able to calibrate every feature in a television, including those that are hidden from consumers. Not every feature of your television may be documented in the user's manual.

As for those who want to do their own tuning, particularly of colour balance, brightness, and contrast, a calibration disk and the viewing filters that accompany such products are invaluable, because the television itself does not offer comparable features.

    • No, Sony telivisions have an option called Flash Focus and sometimes a manual convergence that is user accessable.

    • No, not a calibration issue but a convergence issue. Go to menu then set up and try flash focus. If flash focus does not solve the problem go to manual convergence and try to move the blue and red, green is fixed. If the both blue and red will not move up, down, left and right you have a bad convergence IC on the convergence circuit board.
