Armizare is the Italian term for the traditional martial arts of Europe. This art reached is zenith in the 14th century with the advent of useful firearms. Prior to this time the personal fighting ability of a professional fighting man was his currency and the source of his power and influence. Noble landowners were also for the most part professional soldiers and military leaders. Their skill at arms reinforced their ability to lead and hold power. Men of meager means could win substatial fortunes through the proffession of arms. Consequently Martial Arts were highly developed in Europe. Skills in self defense and combat were instilled at an early age. The most advanced techniques were held secret and reserved for the use of the Noblilty.
In Italy the body of knowledge encompassing all fighting skills armed and unarmed in armour and out , mounted and on foot was know as "Armizare" This art was recored in fighting treatises the most noteable by Fiore Dei Liberi who made it his lifes work to record the state of Martial Arts in the 14th century. He wrote his book Flos Battaglia ( flower of Battle ) in 1409 at the end of a noted career in arms.
