It’s linked to what causes headaches in “brain freeze” The blood flow temporarily decreases causing the cerebral arteries constrict. The nerves in the palate and throat are chilled. It can cause severe headaches as well as making the skin on your face very cold. When the face freezes it means the peripheral nerves are reacting to the sudden coldness of the drink.
