Unless they were very good friends, I would consider it inappropriate behaviour for the workplace.

Knocking is considered a polite way of saying "May I please have your attention for a moment?" You can also draw attention to your presence with an "Excuse me" or any similar phrase. This kind of behaviour acts as a 'lubricant' between busy people who may not appreciate being interrupted while they are working. I know that when I am quite focussed on a task, I do not appreciate someone walking in and abruptly demanding an immediate response, which is how I would interpret this behaviour. In addition, not everyone is in a position to be interrupted at the same time that someone else wants their time (e.g., on the phone, talking with another person, responding to an urgent demand in some fashion).

This has nothing to do with an open-door policy, as that still assumes that people pay one another a certain amount of respect before intruding. I must admit that when I held a supervisory position, whith additional responsibilities for the maintenance and upkeep of the workplace, I often felt that people should take a number, like they do at service counters, and wait until their number is called. There were days when there could be a lineup of three or four people at the cubicle entrance at once. No one, however, walked in and sat down on my desk (which would have been a challenge, as it is always covered with books, papers, reports, and various odd bits of computers and instrumentation).

This question indicates a level of casual behaviour that is suited to friends, but not necessarily working colleagues. If the supervisor is not bothered by the behaviour that is his or her choice. However, some people would most certainly be offended, especially if they are occupied on other matters.
