Help answer this question below.
Ok lets try end it here. You can drink with antibiotics (with possible exception of metronidazole). Alcohol has no effect on their actions, they are not slowed or counter acted or anything. Their action remains the same. Alcohol however will have an effect on your body and if your ill and needing antibiotics then your body will still feel poor because of drinking. But you will feel like that weather or not you are on antibiotics or not!!!
The myth actually seems to of come from the early days of antibiotics. They were perscribed to people for STDs and doctors told them they couldnt drink with them in the hope that if they didnt get drunk they would be less likely to have sex and spread there nasties about.
That is the myth and this is the facts

y on some labels is says 'alchoal must not be drunk whilst taking this medication' then? im sure doctors didnt add that because of a myth there would have been medical tests carried out (and no it wasnt on metronidazole)

Maybe i have given the worng impression here, what i meant was the myth surrounds drinking and antibiotics, not all drugs. For some drugs you must avoid alcohol, but antibiotics are not in this group.
I work in medicine myself (i am a nurse) and this is a subject i have properly researched and have discussed with experts in both pharmacology and related fields in infections so i can assure you my comments are based on facts and not just wild stories or heresay on dodgy websites.

I just finnished school for dental assisting and when we learned about medications, effects, addictions, and so on that was one of the first thing the Dentists told us. You do not drink when on antibiotics because combining the two you can harm your liver and, yes, decrease the effectiveness of the antibiotics. Amox. is one of the more highly used antibiotics used in the dental feild and he stated it specifically having less effectiveness if you drink on it. But other than damaging your liver, it isn't going to seriously adversly affect you. But drinking does that to an extent anyway.
