islamic fasting is required and water is not allowed..the only people not required to fast are young children..pregnant woman..the very sick and old (although many old people still choose to fast) and those who are not mentally sane.... islamic fasting is one of the few things in islam that I have no problem with...fasting is an important part of ones connection to not only god, but with the rest of humanity..my christian mother always had our family fast during the 40 days of lent..we kept everything sparse..had no treat the entire 40 days..and put the money we saved in groceries in a jar and brought it to the food bank at the end of lent..
