The area of the skull under the temples is called the frontal bone, and is the thinnest of all the major skull bones. It is also shielded by only a very thin layer of flesh compared to the rest of the skull, and contains a disproportionate amount of nerve cells. The pain reflex in this area is stronger to attempt to protect the frontal lobes of the brain, which are directly underneath this area and very important.
