Since marriage licenses are issued by the government, and dissolution of marriage is handled by government divorce courts, marriage is a legal concept and independent of religion.

In regards to the religious aspect of marriage, religious denominations such as the United Church of Christ, the Metropolitan Community Church, and the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations preform same sex marriage. When the government does not recognize these marriages, they are giving the perception that these religious denominations are not equal with those denominationS that have all of their marriages recognized since they only perform opposite sex marriages.

Proposition 8 is legal discrimination against same sex couples and is discriminatory against those religious denominations that choose to perform same sex unions, so a vote on Proposition 8 should be NO.
