In a more traditional setting, yes, but it's not as strict a rule as it used to be. As far as current fashion goes, it doesn't matter. Rules for fashion have been relaxed, and it is no longer considered a faux pas if you don't always follow those kind of rules. However, if you were going somewhere more formal, such as a church or workplace where more formal attire than usual is expected, you may want to stick with the no-white rule.
