Despite the fact that I do not, and having not spoken with her in about 8 years now, I know that I will feel an emptiness when I have learned she has died.

My mother was a poor mother to me, emotionally. She let me know every day as a child that I had no value; was ugly from my hair to my toes; and that everything I did disappointed her. An example of this is me winning a national writing competition in Scholastic Magazine and her only response being that she didn't like how the protagonist treats her sick father. I mean...aren't parents supposed to give you a pat on the back when you write a short story that beats-out thousands of other students in the country? I am lucky that somehow I became a halfway decent parent with the example set by her.

She stole my hidden birth control pills when I was in high school and then was angry in that high falluting christian way when I got pregnant. She is immensely psychologically unstable, I suspect from being the adult child of an alcoholic father. And I wouldn't wish her mood swings upon my daughter. The two are unlikely to meet. Oh yes, as a matter of fact, when my daughter was born, I called and offered to fly her out so that she could see the baby, and she just didn't respond, moved on to another of her "me-me-me" topics.

When I was pregnant with the last child, the one she wouldn't fly out to, she stole custody of my 16 year old son, claiming that I was an unfit parent. I won that battle, but it took about ten months and $6K in legal fees. Ironically this was the $6K I had saved up for a Hawaiin vacation. I still haven't saved up enough money to get back to Hawaii. (Her lawyer was her cousin, a retired judge and was free.)

On the other hand, because of my mother's influence, I have a great deal of respect for education, literature, and travel. She is crazy but very intelligent.

Forgive me, but I felt like I had to go into this level of detail. I have answered these mother-loving questions before and been downrated for days for failing to discuss unrequited mother love and apple pie.

Some people apparently don't believe that bad parenting exists in the world.
