Help answer this question below.
Ranks aren't really for anything but to give yourself a goal to reach... The more points you gain, the higher in levels you go, the higher the rank. Nothing more, nothing less.
It gives AB a kind of competitive nature that many people seem to take WAY too seriously, since the REAL purpose is to create a database of questions and answers that can bring people to the site, through searching on the various search engines of the internet.
When it became a much more social site than it previously was, the owners decided to add the "gaming" aspect to it. Whether that's good for a Q&A site or not, it's now the standard, here. It's SUPPOSED to be a friendly competition among friends. It's those who don't like AB, don't like a given player or players, and those jerks who like to DR that make it ... NOT so friendly.

You're reading I'm sorry if this question is dumb, and after all my time here I still don't get it-what are ranks for, and how are they determined?

I figured it was something like that, but wasn't sure how it worked, really. Thanks. :)
