I'm sorry if this question is dumb, and after all my time here I still don't get it-what are ranks for, and how are they determined?

Ranks aren't really for anything but to give yourself a goal to reach... The more points you gain, the higher in levels you go, the higher the rank. Nothing more, nothing less.

It gives AB a kind of competitive nature that many people seem to take WAY too seriously, since the REAL purpose is to create a database of questions and answers that can bring people to the site, through searching on the various search engines of the internet.

When it became a much more social site than it previously was, the owners decided to add the "gaming" aspect to it. Whether that's good for a Q&A site or not, it's now the standard, here. It's SUPPOSED to be a friendly competition among friends. It's those who don't like AB, don't like a given player or players, and those jerks who like to DR that make it ... NOT so friendly.

    • I figured it was something like that, but wasn't sure how it worked, really. Thanks. :)
