What does a mod chip enable the Xbox to do?

    A modchip allows you to run homebrew software, and backups of your games. It enables you to run Linux if you wanted to, you can run emulators, media players, file managers, whatever you can find.

    You can't use a modchip with XBOX live. Microsoft scans your console for changes to the BIOS (that's what a modchip does) then bans your machine if it finds one. You can turn off most modchips and play online, but you have to have the original discs for that and not backups.
