Why are most racing cars manual instead of automatic?

    It is a widely accepted fact that manual transmissions offer better control. Under certain conditions, an automatic will downshift at exactly the wrong time and then send too much torque to the drive wheels and you lose traction. I have nearly been seriously injured by this at 15 MPH; imagine it on a tight, twisty, tree-lined road at 90....

    Additionally, automatics use torque converters so there is no mechanical link between the wheels and the engine; just a fluid coupling. Therefore, manuals also can do a MUCH better job at engine-braking and transferring power efficiently from the engine to the ground.
