People always seek acceptance, comfort, security from those they care about. There are two facets to an apology that helps us heal. Firstly, when we are hurt by someone we care about an apology from that person is a way of meeting expectations you have for that person and the relationship you have with that person. An apology recognizes that a relationship still exists between you and that person, which is comforting from the perspective that loss of certain relationships is painful.

Secondly, I think subconsciously we recognize how difficult it is for a person to make a meaningful apology. When it comes from someone we care about, it is recognized as being sincere, genuine and indication that the person still cares about you and there is nothing better than love and support to help us recover from painful experiences. An apology is admission of wrongdoing or fault, in so doing a person apologizing recognizes that he is flawed and imperfect and did not intend on hurting anyone with his flaws/imperfections. This helps someone hurt by him to heal through the understanding that while humans aren't perfect, we're all equals.
