You're reading What do angels look like?

I disagree with that - I think it can make things easier for many people (not just Christians) for something to have a physical form they can identify with. It's why people are always trying to represent ideas like love with physical objects like chocolates, flowers, etc... If it's tangible, it makes it more real to us.

Not to mention scientific models. The above mentioned 'Big Bang' is a prime example of this.

you can chocolate heart shaped biscuit your boy friend if you want to.
The thing is there is no object, infinity is infinity, it's not an easy concept, you can think of it as a very long ruler but that gives you a trully inncorrect picture.
God is not a shepherd, thinking of him as an old white man with a staff is fine, but that picture is based on no reality. You end up comforted by 'knowing' your god as someone who speaks english with your accent, who wears clothes you can imagine etc. etc. stretch yourself and try. All religions make god in their cultural terms and then argue about the picture theyve conjured. God doesnt wear a turban or have blue skin, it's an abstract concept.

Fair enough, but most of us like to create tangible models of abstract concepts; it makes them easier to work with. Granted, even the best of these models have fundamentals errors that make them imperfect.

I'm aware of what an abstract concept is - what I'm saying is that people feel more comfortable having an image in their mind that tie the idea to. Most people can't comprehend a truly abstract concept and so most of us keep our own mental image of what God or angels look like, whatever seems most natural to us as individuals based on our personal experiences. And I see nothing wrong with that.

if you realise that's what youre doing then fine, but when you start to argue about the size of their feathers and to say that muslims are wrong because angels dont have black eyes, then youve lost the plot.

*laughs* I never said it's a universal image. It's individual to each person.
