You're reading Leaving any religious ideal out, what do you think is the highest ideal people should really strive for?

Tolerance; noun 1. a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry.
2. a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward opinions and practices that differ from one's own.
3. interest in and concern for ideas, opinions, practices, etc., foreign to one's own; a liberal, undogmatic viewpoint.

Acceptance; noun 1. the act of taking or receiving something offered.
2. favorable reception; approval; favor.
3. the act of assenting or believing: acceptance of a theory.
4. the fact or state of being accepted or acceptable.
In my opinion one cannot be wothout the other. How can you accept something you do not understand and if you do not practice tolerance how can you even began to allow yourself to be openor to understand soemthing. Tolerance for others opens the door for acceptance of all.

Is it intolerance to see a person in danger and try to help them? Because, I think a lot of what passes as intolerance is ment to help. Do these people get points for trying?

What are you referring to?
by Twhupfold on February 19th, 2007
Um, I guess you're referring to when someone tries to help someone else 'find God'? People call it intolerance to push your own beliefs onto others because of the 'way' in which it is done. Quite often if a Christian is trying to 'help' someone else find God, they do it without ANY regards for tact, the other persons personal experiences, and an utter lack of humility in regards to their beliefs. Essentially, although they may be trying to help, they are doing it in a way which hurts more than it helps. Like "That guy looks hungry, lets go shove lots of food down his throat!", it just avoids the entire concept of respect or merely tolerating that they want to be different, and they truly believe something different to you, as everyone believes their own religion is the 'right' one, how horrible would this world be if -every- religious person was force-feeding it to others? Thus, it moves from an attempt to help someone, to an intolerance of their beliefs and a lack of respect for them

O.K.

My original thought for this was just that we all practice Tolerance. Look at the definition that I provided and take that into account in your everyday life and it would make a difference whether you have religion or not. This rule if you will can be applied to any religion, race or government.

I very much agree with you Angeleve, Tolerance is very important in such a diverse world. Also yeah, people often consider tolerance to be a very strained form of acceptance, when really that is just a misconception of the words proper meaning; basically they are the same thing put in different ways
