    It was a little place on Jefferson and Central, in Phoenix Arizona, called the Jefferson Hotel. I was picking oranges for a nickle a sack (nearly as big as me)The rate was $1.50 a night. It was about 12' by 6' with newspapers stuffed in the broken panes, of the one window, overlooking the roof of the neighboring building. It had a community bath and shower, and lots of drunk guys. There was a rundown pool hall at street level, with a lunch counter that served one great cheese burger, made the old fashioned way, with a slice of raw onion, when I had the money. I was sixteen.
