OK. I know I'm setting myself up for big time DRing but as this is an opinion question I feel compelled to put my opinion out there. This is in no way intended to convert anyone or to offend anyone, just how I view it based on my experiences and learning.

I believe that man began believing in a god as far back a Cro-Magnon man. It was never put on paper, just passed verbally from the elders to the children. as we reached a point several thousand years ago it had been refined and was written in text with the invention of writing. The old testament is very black and white in a literal, physical sense. I think for the civilizations that believed in the religion (surely there were many that had never even heard of it) it felt very real and in fact was probably very uniform.

I think many religions developed at the same time and many of those competing religions exist today. I don't trust humanity enough to believe that religion hasn't been manipulated throughout human history in order to control populations and justify actions of political and religious leaders. I think that the Roman empire saw an opportunity to keep people in check and began to use religion to it's advantage utilizing what at the time was a breaking religion which embraced God and a man who many claimed to be a messiah (Jesus). It was convenient and easily manipulated into a method of insuring control and power for those who lead it.

I think the bible was created using previous writings and current writings which were beneficial to the ruling government ("Give to Caesar what is his"). What we have today in the bible is a compilation of those actions. The old testament is very rigid and regulates physical action while the new testament is a radical step into regulating not just physical acts but also thought and reason. I just find the timing and the extreme change of direction to throw red flags in a major way.

Religion has been used by leaders, religious and political as a motivator against other religions, even those who share the same basic beliefs (Christian and Muslim are a good example). Then there is the fact that the early christian church was one singular unit. Today there are roughly 39,000 denominations, each with their own specific beliefs. The bible has been read differently so many times that Christianity has splintered an insane amount of times, often based on power trips by church leaders. If there is only one true god and only one factual history then what about all these competing religions and denominations. They certainly all can't be true. So reason dictates that there are many who are being misled, not by malice but by competing beliefs.

The bible? It can't be trusted in my eyes. I don't know what the truth is and the bible can't help me find it so I'm forced to say that until there is something compelling that leads me to believe in the actual existence of a god that there is not one but I keep an open mind should that not be the case. I don't think humanity will ever prove either the existence or non-existence of a god. The answer will never be given. In the meanwhile we'll bicker incessantly but never be able to prove anyone either right or wrong. I don't think we will ever know the truth. It would be nice if we could all accept that and move on but it simply isn't the case. I for my own part have accepted it

    • I believe your right in a lot of ways. From what I've read the Bible has some 200 versions and maybe basically right but it could also be someones interpretation. As you said there is thousands of churchs and they all claim to be the real deal but we know logic says this can't be true. Me I may not know but I just don't see all this chaos happening by chance, I just can't see something from nothing anyway I would like to think people would like to discuss this on a level other then who's right or wrong. They tell people they have to have faith and pray about it in the same sense logic and evidence plays a good part in the final conclusion. All religions are man made and like it or not they believe this person's interpretation. I think they are all motivated by money, power and control. Tell someone I think you are being taken for a ride and they go ballistic. It's going to take a whole lot more space to say what I want to. I would like to keep this going Atleast they could see our point

    • I get visits from Mormon Missionaries and I talk with them but God you think they were being mauled if you point out some facts. They aren't going to like this but these church leaders have 12 million people donating some 5 billion a year to them then I found some talk about them taking some of this money and buying for profit business which generate some 600 million profit then they tell them no paid positions in the church and they talk them into 2 year missions mostly at their expense. I read about this hearing and the bottom line this guy sad it looks like it's a 30 billion dollar corporation posing as a church. If I was a member I would want to look into this. Not to leave anyone out there are church after church The tax free take has to be in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Something wrong with this picture. Take Bennie Hinn anyone want to discuss him I think he's as phony as a three dollar bill yet people think he's the real deal and send him a hundred million a year

    • I just went to a funeral for a family member on Saturday. The mass was beautiful and honestly I think it may help some cope with their loss, but the whole time the priest was doing the mass I was listening to him talk and thinking "what if this isn't the truth and he knows it?". I've been offered no evidence that it is so, just word of mouth and the promise that if I do what the religion asks I'll be awarded in a different life. The catch is that I won't know until I'm dead. How is that appealing?

    • That's not a deal I'd fall for in other aspects of life. If I were buying a home I'd get an inspection done first to ensure the condition of the house is as stated by the seller.

    • Dave, I think many of us, have to have something to believe in. Without hope, faith, and love what would life be? Somedays my faith has been tested.....GREATLY!!!! And others.....I know!!!
Regardless of true or false we must all have goodness and mercy in our minds as we live day to day with each other, no matter where the force is coming from! God Bless!:):)

    • Thanks, Stillme. That we all exist together. We are by no means obligated us to bicker because we think or believe differently. I respect other opinions and people's rights to hold them. I in no way feel offended, challenged or threatened that someone else believes in God or anything else. Tragically, conversations on this topic get pretty heated. You're so cool BTW. :-D

    • Maybe God doesn't want us to wait for Him to "prove" His existence with science (impossible!), nor for us to assume that we can find Him only sometime after we are dead... Maybe He wants us to prepare ourselves to meet Him while in the flesh, by turning WITHIN! "BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD."

    • You need do far more research on primitive man, popular theory is that primitive man's brain reasoned by them talking to themselves in their head in some cases multiple thoughts being mentally voiced, symptoms much like that of MPD, Bipolar syndrome or Paranoid Schizophrenia they in many cases believed these voices to be the words of more than 1 god. As for a god it has been verified through ancient religious texts that when they referred to superior beings it was just that it pertained to many gods. In my opinion god was an angel simply more powerful than the rest or was it I know it to be true that any such beings never had any direct influence over corporeal beings. Whose to say that ancient aritifacts and texts about beings from the skies were the gods spoken of in mankind's mythotheological texts.
