Should I choose Wicca or Satanism? I know there are little things both religions have in common, but they attract me so much they have in common...

Wicca has some commonalities with Satanism, but not much. Firstly, Satanism is about self-gratification. Wicca is about balance - your needs and interests verses the needs and interests of the world around you. The Church of Satan is pretty much Atheistic. Wicca is not. Wicca has an ethical injunction to avoid causing harm (or to cause the least harm) whenever possible. Satanism does not, although the Church of Satan does have injunctions against any form of sexual coercion, harming animals for anything other than self-protection and food, harming little children, stealing (including credit), etc.

In the end, it is up to you which path to take. Which path works for you? You can even try both and choose one or the other. I know Wiccans who subscribe to certain philosophies of both. You can choose neither. It is up to you.

    • ok, wait. People who worship Satan DON'T believe in God? Really?

    • It's complicated. They acknowledge an opposing power, but refuse to accept him as anything but a problem. See joyofsatan.com for more.

    • Well, it depends on the TYPE of Satanism. First you must understand that most Satanists do not worship Satan. LaVeyan Satanists, in particular, find worship of ANYTHING abhorrant. If they can be said to worship anything, they worship themselves. They do not see opposing supernatural powers. They see opposing NATURAL powers - blind conformity (represented often as Christianity, but their view applies to all status quo social structures) and its challenger. Satan is used as an symbol for this challenging. They do not believe in any entities. www.churchofsatan.com . To understand this, you need to read the Satanic Bible by Anton Zander LaVey, which is basically nihilistic existentialism.

    • The Temple of Set is basically LaVeyan, having been formed by disgruntled former priests and priestesses of the Church of Satan. Theistic Satanism does exist, but they view the whole paradigm much differently than any Christian paradigm you can find (except perhaps Gnosticism). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theistic_Satanism

    • Taking from a the word Satanism that they must worship Satan as Christians worship Christ is a myopic paradigm missing the picture. Christianity is one of the few religions based upon the name of the deity. Mormonism isn't comprised of those worshipping Mormon. Hinduism isn't comprised of those worshipping Hindus. Judaism isn't comprised of those worshiping Juda. Islam isn't comprised of those worshipping Isla. Breaking down a word and concluding that the word must contain the deity/deities worshipped is not a valid approach. One would be wise to actually do some research on the matter.

    • antigone, and larry, thanks so much for the answer. I knew a few satanists, once upon a time. And they DID worship satan, as being an enemy of God. So they believe in both, just thought Satan was the more powerful of the two. So that was the reason for my original question up above.

    • Theistic Satanism, as you have seen, does exist. They mostly do not view the two characters (Satan and Yahweh) the way that Christians or Muslims do, though. It is more along the lines of Gnosticism, except those Gnostic sects say Jesus freed humans from the oppressive Yahweh. In this case, Theistic Satanists (and Luciferians) believe Yahweh is the oppresser and Satan is the one who had the courage to rebel.

    • Complicated is an understatement, Larry, but not with proper research. With enough knowledge of ancient paganism, sumerian mythology, and sanskrit, one can very easily discover that Satanism existed long before Judaism and Christianity were ever even thought of.
