I had an abortion in my younger years, five months into the pregnancy. Can I call myself a mother, or am I not, seeing as how I never actually gave birth?

Yes. You ARE a mother. Absolutely you are. You ARE a mom, too.
Setting all bias opinions aside and stigmas and morals and other "social" beliefs...
I can see the truth for exactly what the truth is.
    You were pregnant.
You carried your child inside of you.
    That makes you a mother.
You had an abortion and that is OK, too.
The fact is, you were a mom then, before the baby was aborted and you ARE a mom right now!
    Just because your baby...
did you catch that ...??? YOUR baby?
Just because your baby is not with you does not mean that you are not a mom or a mother.
If you were not a mom or a mother; if you are not one now, you would not have emotional feelings of loss and grief, or perhaps, feelings of relief! In any case, you asked the question and that is enough, in itself. The words,
    Actually: At the present moment.
Birth: The kinship relation of an offspring to the parents.
A still born baby is still an offspring. An aborted baby is still an offspring.
    Birth also means: Have.
Have means: Have ownership or possession of.
You couldn't have an abortion if you didn't HAVE a baby.
Your baby could not HAVE been aborted if your baby did not HAVE a mom or a mother.

    • Based on this logic, someone who drops out of law school can still be called a lawyer.

    • Gotta disagree w/GR this time. Lawyer is based upon passing an exam. Motherhood is based on biology. Parenthood needs a live child, but motherhood just the female body response to an implanted fertilised egg.

    • A mother doesnt have relief after aborting a child. A mother WOULDNT abort a child.

Contributor..please stop this vent on justifying that she is a mom and mother.
      It's simple she is not.

    • I disagree Ptrask, "but motherhood just the female body response to an implanted fertilised egg." this implies that women who adopt a child are not mothers. I don't think it is based solely on biology.
