In a restaurant over the weekend, all of the cutlery was slightly magnetic, the knives and forks stuck to each other. Why would this be?

In some kitchens, the knives are held in place on a strip of magnet. It may have magnetized the knife making it attracted to the fork with magnetic pull. Other than that, I don't see why they would be magnetized.

    • Do you listen to NPR's Car Talk -- that was their 'puzzler' question last week!

    • I've not heard of "NPR's Car Talk", sorry. Is it a podcast?

    • Car Talk the most popular show on National Public Radio (in the US) -- with "Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers", a couple of auto mechanics with engineering degrees from MIT. Actually their explanation was that restaurants put powerful magnets in their trash to prevent accidental loss of silverware, hence the magnetization of some of the pieces. http://www.cartalk.com/content/puzzler/transcripts/200838/index.html

    • Ah! That's a pretty neat explanation. Thanks! I'm not from the US, so I didn't know about National Public Radio.
