How long does one need to go with out drinking before one is nolonger considered a drinker?

I can't really answer this directly, but my brother-in-law is apparently a recovering alcoholic, and still goes to AA meetings although he hasn't drunk alcohol for 20 years. I am surrounded by heavy drinkers in my family, but I would say if any of them stopped for a year I would regard them as a non-drinker.
