I had to do exactly that recently and this worked:
I hope that you didn't scrub on it, which will only set it in harder and deeper into the carpet fibers.
Lets say that you did scrub it. That will set us up for the worse case scenario:
You truly need to go out and purchase a wet/dry vacuum first of all.
Take one quart of COLD WATER and add one scoop of oxi-clean laundry booster into the container of cold water. Stir it up to disolve it a bit and then pour the solution directly onto the stain. Use a WHITE rag or a nylon scrub brush on the stain and scrub it in a circular motion. Vacuum the area with a wet/dry vacuum and dothis repeatedly until the stain is removed. You will fray the carpet fibers a bit during scrubbing, but the stain will be gone. HOWEVER,
If you have carpet that is of a dark color you need to lighten up on the Oxi-clean mixture. Use a lot less Oxi-clean in cold water and apply several smaller amounts of water and Oxi-clean to the area. Scrub gently, and vacuum with a wet/dry vacuum that does NOT have a beating brush like most vacuums have. The darker the carpet, the less Oxi-clean and more applications of a lighter solution is needed. Your stain WILL come out.
I used this method to remove red-wine vomit, as well as extremely dark diarrhea from WHITE carpet. Both came out completely after approximately 4 applications of the solution.
NOTE: It is best to gently remove any top-layers of soil prior to attempting the cleaning process. In doing so, do not scrub anything until you can remove (if possible) as much of the soiled mess by hand. To do this, simply insert a thin sheet of posterboard or a half-cut paper plate under as much of the mess as possible and lift it from the carpet and throw it way, of course. Do not worry about "grinding it in" while trying to lift excess "yuck" from the carpet. The "yuck" is already there. Once you feel satisfied that you have had enough of cleaning up "yuck" ...begin the Cold Water/Oxi-clean method of removal.

    • Oxi-clean is of an oxidizing bleach and is the on the acid end of the ph scale as opposed to regular bleach which is alkaline on the high end of the ph scale. stomuck acid is also acid ph. to try and stop the effects of the acid on your acid dyed carpet( most carpets are dyed with acid dyes) you should neutralize it with baking soda. then have it cleaned asap. If color fading has occured try useing carpet dye sticks.
