I have not reached the state of paranoia that would make me think that out of 300,000,000 people they are watching ME.

I know this is late. But read the news. A former employee of AT&T has admitted to setting up a server that stores a list of all visited websites and which IP adresses visit them. Therefore, all information that is accessed via an AT&T line is bottlenecked through a central server. They are not watching in real-time what you are doing, but they are saving it to be sifted through later. You can find many stories about this with a simple google search. Also, the fact that someone is paranoid does not necessarily make them wrong. In this case, it makes them smart. They are doing it, they have told us they are doing it. I don't see where there could be any possible debate on the subject.

The original msg reads 'the goverment' not any particular one so I guess my post is valid...
Many providers are doing the same, in many countries but in some cases it is very obvious, for example, it is a fact that the government of Castro reads everything before it goes out even when only a few people in the island have any form of internet access, I got a letter from a Cuban resident just a few days ago and to my surprise it showed way down on my list which is sorted by date, so I guess they don't even have the technology to censorship fast enough so people won't notice, or they just don't care, again this is an extreme case, the msg also had a note at the end stating more or less that they reserve the right to do it!
