When was it decreed that women could not be priests, and why? Did a pope make this rule?

    Just something to add to the mix... although there aren't supposed to be female preists, there once was a(n illegitimate and many many years ago) female Pope. This is why each new Pope is carried aloft over the heads of the cardinals to (ahem) check the genitalia.

    • Before a candidate for the preisthood enters the seminary a medical examination is given by a physician, so a man has to be intact sexually to be ordained. Waiting until the cardinals lift him up to check him out (which as noted is a nutty rumor, there was no Pope Joan!) would be rather late.
      The new Pope did however raise the height of the urinals in the Vatican to keep the cardinals on thier toes.
      (NB: Joke for all you who believe any nonsense about the Catholic Church!)
