When the tide goes out, where does the wter go?

    Imagine nudging a bowl of water hard enough to make the water slosh backwards and forwards and you are seeing the tides on a much smaller scale - the tides make the sea slosh backwards and forwards from one side to the other. The stimulus for tides isn't a nudge, but the gravitational effect of the moon and, to a lesser extent, the sun.
