Question

Help answer this question below.

I play the sax, and recently something like mold has been growing on my reeds. It's grayish, and starts as spots, then joins together to make fuzz. I cover it with the reed covers, and I tried different reeds, but no luck. Why?

They're definitely not drying out enough. Depending on where you live, the humidity might be so bad that you do have to take further measures to prevent your reeds from being ruined like that. I know since I am from Florida!

First off, make sure you take your reeds off your mouthpiece after each time you play. Do not leave them on the mouthpiece (though it doesn't sound like you are doing this). Next, place them in what is called a reed "guard" or reed "saver", not just the covers they come in. Reed guards are specially designed to allow your reeds to dry better. They are fairly cheap (a few bucks at your local band store or online supplier) and are great since they also reduce warping. Also, make sure you don't play on the same reed day after day. Generally, try to rotate through about four so each has time to dry. Also, make sure you reduce the amount of moisture in your instrument case. Clean your saxophone regularly with swabs. You can also buy "mouthpiece savers" and also long puffy rods that you stick in the body of your horn. Both of these you leave in your saxophone so that they collect the moisture. However, if you find that they collect so much that they feel damp, you should not leave them in for long periods of time. Finally, make sure you don't keep your sax in an area that is high in humidity like that bathroom or outside.
