Anywhere is fine. Up front where you can see and hear well is always my own preference.

If you don't have a good Catholic friend to go with I even recommend calling the parish office and asking to talk to the priest and maybe ask if someone can meet you as you come in and sit with you.

You can tell the usher if you like and ask to be seated with their family or someone who can help you not feel so out of place.

If going for the first time all by yourself, I suggest that you sit near the front, but under no circumstances go up to take communion. There are real good reasons for that, & until you understand them, just don't go up there. Spend that time kneeling in prayer and worship or sitting and praying.
