Why do women (and some men) stay in abusive relationships, even when they know they should leave?

    Because frequently they have nowhere else to go. Because often they cannot accept that the abusive behaviour is how this relationship is going to be, and they hang on in the vague hope that it will stop and they'll get the fairytale they were expecting. Because they hate to admit they were wrong (especially true when your parents tried to dissuade you from marrying him in the first place!) I stayed for 12 years. I had nowhere else to go, we only had one car and that was registered in his name so I wouldn't be able to get to work to support my kids. I left in the end because my parents were prepared to take me and my 3 boys in until I could get on my feet and a friend of my (then) husband loaned me a vehicle.
