My mother is dying of smoking-associated diseases. She says she could not quit smoking because the power of addiction was so strong. She also feared gaining weight.

She didn't quit even though she knew she was harming her children, both of whom have lung damage from being exposed to her second-hand smoke and one of whom suffered from excruciating earaches due to her smoking:

    http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003046.htm
NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH WEBSITE: "The following steps may help prevent earaches: Avoid smoking near children. Smoking has been shown to cause millions of ear infections each year in children."

    http://www.audiologyonline.com/news/news_detail.asp?news_id=518
Earaches in children linked to smoking while pregnant: "Infants whose mothers smoke both during and after pregnancy have an increased risk of suffering chronic ear infections, researchers report. 'There's plenty of problems that infants exposed to smoke in the womb have--ear infections are another possible propensity,' study author Dr. Judith E. C. Lieu, an instructor in the department of otolaryngology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, told Reuters Health. 'It's one more reason to get mothers to quit smoking (while pregnant).' "

She was also told that one of her children was allergic to tobacco smoke, and could develop asthma if she didn't quit smoking around her kids. Nonetheless, she continued to smoke until forced to quit cold-turkey in a hospital after a heart attack broght about by smoking. Now, she is dying slowly and painfully of emphysema and COPD (chronic obstrucive pulmonary disease) due to the smoking; has had additional heart attacks; and we're just waiting for the day lung cancer shows up.

And she says it was because it was too hard to stop. The nicotine had that much of a grip on her. Her own life, and her children's lives, were not important enough overcome the addiction on her own. She says no teenager believes they will die of smoking, not in their hearts. So that's why she started, and that's why she can't stop.

    • thats sad for her for sure....but dont you think she enjoyed smoking most of the time and this is the result of that choice/addiction?
