Start off by learning a little bit of each field that it takes to make a game. You don't have to know how to do people's jobs, just know the terms and generalities of the fields. Having some artistic and writing talent makes things A WHOLE LOT easier for everyone involved in the project. A bit of programming knowledge, particularly in C++, is also helpful. A college degree in some field is highly suggested.

With this knowledge in hand, you have a few options.

You can start you own development company. You will need at least a programmer and an artist, and that's the bare minimum. Most modern games take at least a crew of forty people months to make. And the huge games (Final Fantasy and such) takes a massive crew YEARS to make. Once you have a demo of your game, along with some other info, you take it to a production company (EA Games, Nintendo, etc. [although EA Games and Nintendo have a development team AND a prodcution team. It gets confusing]). If they like your demo, and you're lucky, they'll say yes and work out a contract. Congradulations! you are an uber lucky, very determined Game Designer.

The most reasonable way is to join a development company already in business. You're best bet is getting in as an artist or a programmer. You can also try sound or testing but your chances of getting a job drop considerably. The odds of you getting a job in a up and running company as a game designer , even if your idea is the best idea ever in the whole wide world, is probably slim to none. Once you've gotten in, express your interest in designing games. It could be weeks, or it could be years, but if you have a good idea and lot of determination, you will eventually get the go ahead on your very own game. Congradulations! You will probably be a well-paid, respected and determined Game Designer.

    Good luck.
