Staffie is correct, the most common uses for a tail is for balancing or swatting flies and other pests.

Some animals have tiny tails which are of no use, and are left over from earlier ancestors who did use them but have slowly evolved to a state where they are no longer needed.

Flying squirrels use them to balance for long jumps, and to give them a more guided flight. Birds use their tail along with their wings to control their flight path and climb/dive. Lots of marine animals use them for swimming.

Beavers use their tails when constructing dams, or for scaring off predators by thumping them rapidly or swinging them.
