Does anyone know what muscles are worked when you do the freestyle or crawl during swimming? How about the breast stroke?

I think all muscles of the body are being used, except for the external anal sphincter.
Of course there's emphasis on the triceps and lats during freestyle, and generally your shoulder, scapular, calf and thigh muscles, too.

    • Thank you! I really want to use that swimming stroke that works the shoulders, since that is the area I want to develop.

    • Didn't realize you were serious about this. You can go to www.usaswimming.org or www.clubswim.com to see if there's a swim club at your location. You can definitely get more advice and tips on improving your technique from them. Also remember that when working on a particular set of muscles, make sure to work the antagonists (those muscles doing the opposite actions), too so that you don't develop muscle imbalance.
