Would you rather live next door to black kids who always smoke pot and breakdance, or racist white people who constantly use the "n" word?

You're reading I find it very wrong for people to say "this is America, you have to speak english", how do you feel about this and do you agree?
Comments
sorry but its a little ignorant for you to say that you wouldn't learn any other language for someone but you want to them to learn your language for you. why would they if you're not willing to make the same effort?
by Berenise on February 5th, 2007
BECAUSE THIS IS MY FREAKING COUNTRY!. I live here and they are moving in! And I did learn French and spoke it in France because I didn't expect the french to learn english because I was comming over for a visit!
by Valparaiso on February 5th, 2007
this is not called the valparaiso country. no its called america. a place where you are free. remember that.
by Berenise on February 5th, 2007
yes but I was born and raised here and they are comming in!
by Valparaiso on February 5th, 2007
so what!!!! i was raised and born in the dominican republic and many americans go over there not knowing a bit of spanish and we welcome them and would never tell them "well this is a spanish countrym you have to learn spanish"
by Berenise on February 5th, 2007
Plenty of people were born and raised here and don't speak English. So you're tied for the "more American than you" title now? Or will you just start counting something else to retroactively justify your bigotry? "Oh, never mind... I meant that you aren't as American as me because... you root for a halfway decent soccer team! YEAH! Take that!" Please.

Going on a two week holiday and not speaking the language is slightly different to immigrating and not learning the language

America is FREE to have an opinion as long as it does not clash with yours , I like that one it makes a good quote
by Firebrand on February 5th, 2007
Although this is a controversial answer, I believe that once english is taugh, it can be one of the most solid languages of understanding and communication. I agree with the overall message.

jbarbie> You don't root for a team based on how good it is. (And Mexico is at about the same level as the US now.) Them rooting for Mexico indicates to me that they think of themselves as Mexican and not American. I mean if you root for a team based on how good it is then everyone in the world would support Brazil or some big team like that. And I wouldn't support Valparaiso basketball anymore I'd go cheer for Duke. And BTW anyone who moves into a nation aught to learn to speak their language. I don't care what nation they are comming from or what nation they are going into. If I was moving into Britian I'd start calling an Eraser a rubber so the brits would understand me. If I where going to France I'd learn to speak French fluenty. etc etc.
by Valparaiso on February 5th, 2007
You guys keep saying that, but this country is NOT FRANCE. It's not the same thing. You can get along just fine in the US without learning the language that "most" people speak. It's possible. It doesn't hurt anyone. Get over it.
by Jessicax23 on February 5th, 2007
It does hurt people in America, who don't speak American. If you are trying to order food or pay for gas or even simply buy something at a store, and have no idea about what you need to give the clerk, and the clerk speaks American, because well, the clerk is an American. You may just run into a greedy teenager or other person, who will quickly take advantage of the situation. Last week there were some Mexicans in a local restaurant who bought a pizza and were paying for it. The bill was 23.00 or so, and they handed the clerk a $100.00 bill. They had no idea how much money that was nor what they were supposed to get in change. You figure it out. This happens all the time!

that's why people like them should learn ENGLISH
by lotzenfecker on March 6th, 2008
Exactly!
by Capt.Lizzie_pirate king_Swann on March 6th, 2008
Well they should be saying this is the United States you should speak english. In Mexico they speak spanish and Mexico is part of North America, and then we have Central America and South America...The correct term should be United States...not America, since in saying so makes that comment incorrect, since the United States is not the only country part of the Americas!

SexyC- Well, duh, but that is really not the point at contest here...
by Capt.Lizzie_pirate king_Swann on August 29th, 2008
This was an immigration and Citizenship question on learning the native language. Both Berenise and Valparaiso have been gone over a year now. Berenise was Hispanic and begrudged Hispanic people having to learn English. Nothing to do with which countries belong to North America as a Continent.
by Firebrand on August 29th, 2008
My bad. Your right, sorry guys.
