I think they are entitled to eat whatever they want, and dislike meat etc.

But if you start telling me what to eat or acting all "holier than thou", I'm going to shove my fork in your eye.

    • The thing that bothers me most about meat consumption is that it is a wasteful use of land and water. Our land is being squandered when we use it to feed animals that people then eat instead of using the land to feed people directly. About half of the water the U.S. uses for livestock. This makes meat consumption every one's problem, not just the people who eat meat. Sometimes I wonder why land is worth defending if people and industries are going to use it foolishly anyway.

Would you like it if your neighbor dumped his motor oil in the aquifer where everyone gets their water? Or would you just think to each his own, he prefers the convenience of dumping the used motor oil in his backyard. Would this bother you if you do the environmentally responsible thing and take it to be recycled?

    • Can you say, "holier than thou?"

    • Why, because I dare question meat production? Sorry, for challenging your dogmas by suggesting that meat production is less than divine. I admire your childlike innocence where cause and effect relationships do not exist. You must be a very relaxed person with few concerns about anything.

    • Lol WoOZ. Salad fork? Good point though (pardon the pun). Some do seem to get on a high horse to make themselves feel adequate.

    • I suppose you also like to make fun of engineers who work on developing renewable energy sources too. Why should we care about preserving the environment or resource conservation? Only uptight, condescending, holier-than-thou people concern themselves with such things.

    • Odd, I don't recall directing the comment at you. Feeling defensive?

    • I love all of the assumptions you make, Mr/Ms Failure. Did I hit a nerve?

    • Why is it that when anyone talks about the positive aspects a vegetarian diet has on the environment, animal welfare, or prevention of heart disease (the #1 cause of death in the U.S.)one is labled as "holier than thou"? If one talks about how fabulous meat parties with Ronald Mc Donald are from now until the end of time, those messages are not viewed with any comparable level of scrutiny.

    • It comes across as preachy, that's why. When someone expresses a sentiment such as "I think they are entitled to eat whatever they want, and dislike meat etc." and you jump all over them trying to assert your own superiority and justify to them that your point of view is the absolute, correct one, it sounds like you're preaching. You are also highly condescending in your rather liberal use of the MEAT EATERS = MCDONALDS CUSTOMERS = EVILLLLL analogies. Not all meat-eaters are McDonald's customers (though McDonalds is evil - but I agree with that statement for more reasons than just how awfully the corporation treats animals). And then you act like you're being discriminated against just for "dissenting."

    • The fact is that I actually completely agree with you on the animal rights / meat industry corruption issue. But the way that you present the argument, and the fact that your preoccupation seems to be mostly about shaming others into converting to veganism makes me more inclined to just disagree with you because I find your manner disagreeable.

    • I never said that I was superior to anyone. What I did say is that some production and consumption routines have more problems than others. Should we act as if coal does not pollute the atmosphere because nuclear power does not? Would analyzing these issues be akin to calling those involved in the coal industry evil? Should we act as if hybrid cars cause as much environmental damage as SUVs because if we don't we are essentially calling people who drive SUVs evil and we are being preachy?
      ...
I don't know if I am comfortable with the one-way-is-just-as-problematic-as-the-next philosophy. Many people understand the world better through scientific method than nihilism.

    • Yeah, but I'm just as guilty about getting on the high horse about things though. So I'm in no place to be holier than thou about holier than thou people haha.

And yeah, failed, I totally agree with you. I love it when people are vegetarians and stuff like that but I can't quite do it myself. But kudos for doing so (I think?).

Sometimes I think that we collectively become complacent about issues that should outrage us. I also get on my high horse about things other than meat production problems (but those are high on my list of business/social problems that irritate me). I don't blame individuals when my qualms are with businesses and systems that are much more powerful than any individual I know.

    • Yeah, I agree about the complacency issue. But life is so hard to live without worrying about everyone/thing else in the world, so it just gets so easy to just say "Fuck it! I like beef. Gimme a burger"
      -
It's like Mad Eye Moody says "CONSTANT VIGILANCE!" haha. Unfortunately, I get more and more complacent about issues due to my realization of the system at work. It's just...impossible to change the status quo as far as I can tell.
