I suffer from depression, as do several other members of my family. I have been taking Zoloft for 10 years now, with minimal side effects. I can only last 2 days without medication before I start to slide back into the abyss, and I will fight tooth and nail for my right to medication to keep me sane and functional.

    • I've been on Effexor for 2 years for post partum depression, I feel better now then I have for many years. I can enjoy my son, my husband and my life now. Thanks for your input.

    • It really pisses me off how people assume that if you take an antidepressant it will alter your personality. It is obvious to me that my personality HAD changed, and this medication is enabling me to function as I should - and would have prior to developing depression.

    • Yes, I agree. There are still members of my own family that don't know I take this medication.

    • There's quite a stigma attached, isn't there! Don't tell them then - it's none of their business anyway - most of my family don't know I take medication either, but then I don't know (or want to) what medications they take.

    • Yes that is very true, I can't be the only "crazy" one in my family. lol Depression is genetic.

    • For sure. Looking back now it is obvious to me that my father suffered depression (he died several years ago) and I suspect my youngest sister does too although we've never openly discussed it. My oldest son is distant and uncommunicative and very like my father in so many ways - I believe he may be another sufferer (although he would never admit it even if he knew it) and my second son has a whole range of psychiatric problems, including depression which he refuses to take medication for. My god, we're a commune of crazies!! Heh Heh.

    • Our son is only two, but I do worry about his future. I guess all I can do is be open to him about it as he grows and matures and hope that he can talk to me if he needs.

    • Unfortunately it is something that he will need to be aware of as he grows. I do hope he accepts your advice.
