The concept of a space elevator allows for a structured mechanical system that joins a geostationary orbiting platform to the ground with a series of electrical elevators. If it were possible, we could enter into an enclosed booth at sea level, push a button and get boosted into space just like taking a 60 mile elevator ride.
To build one, you would need to find a material or design that is strong enough to sustain itself against the strength of earths gravity and allow you to erect a tower 60 miles high. So far, due to engineering limitations our tallest structures don't even reach 2000 feet in height.
