XM is a company that provides radio programming by satellite transmission. They charge a fee of 9.99 a month, but they give you access to over 100 channels, many or most of which are commercial free. They let you hear music of many kinds, sports programming, and tons of news, talk, business and weather shows.

It seems really cool that you don't have to search for a station when you travel, and the commercial-free aspect of some of the stations is nice too. Or, especially if you don't live in a major metro area, you might like the selection of stations that you have on XM better than what you have on broadcast radio. Also the signal is digital, so it should sound better than FM or especially AM signals do (although in the car engine noise and road noise will always make sound quality less of an issue than it is in the home).

The radio built into your car and the stereo in your home can't handle it though. Users of XM or other satellite radio service have to buy a new radio, which is another cost in addition to the monthly fee.
