Im not an expert but I have read that when you're in your highest gear with the lowest rpms possible, that is when you're most fuel-efficient. (high gear + low rpms = less gas used) On the highway at least.

You're reading Doe sit seem like people are driving slower now than a year ago? Do they think driving slower will save gas? It doesn't. Driving really fast or slow is not the most efficient for mileage.
